A Tour of Typical Food
1. Baguette
The baguette is one of the most recognizable symbols of France. This long, crunchy bread is eaten at every meal, whether as a side dish, to make sandwiches or just with a little butter. There's nothing more French than carrying a baguette under your arm while walking the streets of Paris.
2. Croissant
The croissant is a French breakfast classic. Made with a puff pastry rich in butter, its half-moon shape and its crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside texture have won over palates around the world. Accompanied by a coffee or tea, it's the perfect way to start the day.
3. Ratatouille
This dish originating from Provence is an ode to fresh vegetables. Ratatouille is made with a combination of eggplant, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes, onions and garlic, slowly cooked in olive oil with herbs de Provence. It is a colorful and tasty dish that can be served hot or cold, alone or as a side dish.
4. Coq au Vin
Coq au Vin is one of the most traditional dishes of French cuisine. Made with chicken marinated and slowly cooked in red wine, it is enriched with mushrooms, onions, garlic and bacon. This robust and tasty dish is typical of the Burgundy region, where wine is an integral part of the local culture.
5. Crème Brûlée
No French meal would be complete without a dessert to match. Crème Brûlée is a creamy delight, made with egg yolks, sugar, cream and vanilla. The most distinctive feature of this sweet is the caramelized sugar crust on top, which breaks apart with a spoon, revealing the smooth, rich texture beneath.
6. Escargots
Although it may seem exotic to many, escargots are a delicacy in France. These snails are generally prepared with garlic butter, parsley and white wine and served as a starter. The flavor is delicate and the experience of eating something so different is part of French gastronomic culture.
